Simple Shapes
( Mathematics for Grade I, children with learning disability)
"Man shapes himself through decisions that
shape his environment."

Simple
shapes can be described by basic geometry objects such as a set of
two or more points, a line, a curve, a plane, and a plane figure (e.g. square, triangle or circle).
Shapes are all around us. Here are some items you see that are shapes like circles, squares and triangles.

Let us sing about simple shape:
Preparation:
Before singing the song, introduce or review different shapes. "The Shape Song " practices triangle, circle and square.
The Shape Song
♫ Okay everybody. We're going to make some shapes. Show me your hands.
Let's start with a triangle!
A triangle. Can you make a triangle? [Make a triangle with your hands.]A triangle. Can you make a triangle?
A triangle. Can you find a triangle? [Make a triangle with your hands, and then place your hand above your eyes as if you are searching for something.]A triangle. Can you find a triangle?
A triangle. Can you find a triangle? [Make a triangle with your hands, and then place your hand above your eyes as if you are searching for something.]A triangle. Can you find a triangle?
Can you find a triangle? Ready...GO! [Everybody hold hands in a circle, and then everyone scatters to find the shape on "GO!"]
A circle. Can you make a circle? [Make a circle with your hands.]
A circle. Can you make a circle?
Can you find a circle? Ready...GO! [Everybody hold hands in a circle, and then everyone scatters to find the shape on "GO!"]
A square. Can you make a square? [Make a square with your hands.]
A square. Can you make a square?
A square. Can you find a square? [Make a square with your hands, and then place your hand above your eyes as if you are searching for something.]
A square. Can you find an square?
Can you find an square? Ready...GO! [Everybody hold hands in a circle, and then everyone scatters to find the shape on "GO!"]
A triangle, a circle, and a square..... ♫
Now, let's make a circle!
A circle. Can you find a circle? [Make a circle with your hands, and then place your hand above your eyes as if you are searching for something.]
A circle. Can you find a circle?
How about an square?
A triangle, a circle, and a square. [Make the shapes with your hands or point to the shapes around the room.]
A triangle, a circle, and a square.
Benefits:
This is a super simple song for practicing shape recognition. It's also a fun fingerplay as children get to create the different shapes with their hands or even their bodies. It teaches useful language for making and looking for objects.
Importance of simple shape:
When you're drawing characters, figures and objects, one of the most important steps is to break them down into the most simple shapes possible. These are the building blocks that will help you with more advanced drawings later on.
- Practice drawing simple shapes such as lines, squares, circles and triangles. One good way to practice making circles is by first constructing a square with four straight lines. Then draw diagonal lines across the center from the corners.
- Mark points in the center of each border line on the square. These are the four points that the circle's edges must touch in order for it to be the right shape. Now draw a circle that connects these points.
- The more times you practice this exercise, the easier drawing circles will be. Circles are a very important shape to master because they're used in many types of drawings, especially as heads on characters.
Once you master the important simple shapes, you'll be able to bring them together to form a character. Try looking at objects and finding the simple shapes and forms within them. This is an important step in breaking down drawings into manageable parts.
For example, a human figure is made of circles, squares and other simple shapes. Try drawing trees, cars and other basic objects by finding the simple shapes in them. One famous character that uses simple shapes is Sponge Bob:
- To create his form, start off with one large square.
- You can make it three dimensional by adding lines and squares behind it.
- Then add circles for the eyes.
- This will create the basic shape of Sponge Bob and from there you can add the final details.
Now find your favorite object in your room and try breaking it down into its basic shapes. Practice doing this with as many objects as possible.
